Six Nations opening weekend – quick-fire review

The Six Nations tournament got off to an action-packed start, with England and Wales both giving convincing performances. Take a look at our quick-fire review of the matches…..

6 Nations Teams flags against pitch with lines

Italy 15- England 46

England’s early tries, courtesy of Anthony Watson set England on their way. Italy managed to fight back to within 12 points with a mere 20 minutes to go. However, a late break from Sam Simmonds (Six Nations debutant) and well worked tries from George Ford and Jack Nowell gave England the chance to secure a victory.

The victory this weekend means Jones’s side have now won 23/24 matches in charge – in contrast, for Conor O’Shea’s side, this is a 13th consecutive Six Nations defeat for the tournament’s continuing strugglers.

Man of the match – Owen Farrell – England’s inside centre’s passes and breaks were crucial to the end result.

Wales 34 vs Scotland 7

Wales managed to make a racing start to the match thanks to early tries from Gareth Davies and Leigh Halfpenny and rocketed to 24 points ahead early on in the second half. Wales finished the match with 34 points, with Steff Evans sealing the bonus-point try. Scotland made too many page 1 errors to compete with a ruthless and strong Wales.

This is Warren Gatland’s 50th win as Wales coach in a match that marked the 10th anniversary of his first match in charge, as well as it being the side’s 50th win in the expanded Six Nations tournament.

France 13 vs Ireland 15

A long-range drop goal from Johnny Sexton was the magic moments from the close match between France and Ireland this weekend and arguably the highlight of the weekend action overall.

France only managed to clinch the lead in the 71st minute and for a very short period until Sexton delivered his stunning drop goal in the 83rd minute, giving Joe Schmidt their important opening win.
